1st Heath Hayes Cubs and Scout Group
We have welcomed Heath Hayes cubs today (Sunday 9th September) and it has been a very rewarding time with their hard-working leaders and parents setting up several activities to give the children an exciting afternoon. Archery, axe throwing, shelter building and bug hunting. They also foraged fruit which was cooked and turned into a pudding served with custard. All the fruit was organic and importantly gave the children the opportunity to learn about food and its origins.

1st Heath Hayes Cubs and Scout Group
This is the caterpillar of the Meadow Brown butterfly. It’s very common and this specimen was found on the underside of a large poplar leaf.
The root system of poplar trees can be a problem, but the side shoots are great for building shelters with their broad leaves and long soft stems. The roots grow vigorously and send up long clusters of shoots which can easily be cut and gathered.
Bug hunting in a wildlife zone. This area is well estblished with the moss building up in a shady area over many years.
Axe throwing proved very enjoyable with a very careful Helen Coward.
Archery using recurve bows with highly trained specialists.
The field shelter carefully constructed using cut and weaving skills. Each team gathered and built up the structure resulting in a great team effort. Im confident this will also be a useful wildlife haven at some point with the material the children gathered.
